5 Essential Oils to Deter Bugs Naturally
Reviewed by ACHS Dean of Aromatherapy, Amanda Lattin.
Summer sunshine, backyard picnics, and balmy evenings are some of the season’s greatest pleasures, until the bugs show up. Citronella may be the most famous essential oil for repelling insects, but it’s far from the only natural choice. If you’re seeking alternatives to ward off mosquitoes, ticks, ants, and flies, there are plenty of other effective options to consider. Here are five powerful essential oils that can help deter bugs naturally.
1. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)
Lemongrass essential oil is a close cousin to citronella but has a brighter, more citrusy scent. It contains high levels of citral and geraniol, compounds known to act as a defense against mosquitoes, ants, and even fleas.
How to use it:
-
Dilute with a carrier oil (such as aloe vera Glycine soja, jojoba Simmondsia chinensis, or argan Argania spinosa) and apply to exposed skin. Place 20 drops in 2oz (60ml) of carrier oil in a glass bottle with a dropper or spray cap.
-
Add 10–15 drops to a 2-oz spray bottle with water and witch hazel for a quick DIY bug spray.
2. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
This floral favorite isn’t just calming—it’s a surprisingly effective pest shield. Lavender essential oil contains linalool, which deters mosquitoes and flies while also soothing bites if you do get bitten.
How to use it:
-
Add 2-3 drops in 1-2 tsp. of unscented lotion or carrier oil and apply to pulse points, such as your wrists or neck.
-
Diffuse outdoors during evening gatherings to keep bugs away.
3. Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)
The sharp, menthol-rich aroma of peppermint essential oil makes it a solid defense against ants, spiders, flies, and mosquitoes. Bonus: it’s refreshing in the summer heat!
How to use it:
-
Place a few drops on cotton balls and tuck them near doorways, windows, or picnic tables.
-
Mix into a spray with distilled water and apply around the perimeter of your outdoor space.
4. Eucalyptus Globulus (Eucalyptus globulus)
Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is a top choice for keeping mosquitoes and ticks away. It contains eucalyptol (a.k.a. 1,8-cineole), which can provide hours of bug protection. Choose lemon eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus citriodora) for an even more potent effect.
How to use it:
-
Add 10–15 drops to a 2-oz spray bottle with water and witch hazel for a quick DIY bug spray.
-
Add 1-3 drops in 1-2 tsp of lotion or a carrier oil and apply to skin before heading outdoors.
5. Virginian Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana)
Cedarwood essential oil is excellent for keeping away moths, fleas, and ticks. Its grounding, woodsy scent is often used in natural pet products and outdoor sprays.
How to use it:
-
Add a few drops to your favorite natural shampoo (or your pet’s shampoo!).
-
Combine with water and vinegar to create an insect-repelling room or closet spray.
Pro Tips for Natural Bug Repellents:
-
Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying to skin (such as jojoba Simmondsia chinensis, sweet almond Prunus amygdalus var. dulcis, or coconut oil).
-
Test on a small patch of skin first to check for sensitivity.
-
Reapply every couple of hours when spending time outdoors.
-
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
