As a holistic shopper myself, I know how important credibility and quality are to you. That’s why I take great pride in sharing the stories behind all the products you love in the Apothecary Shoppe.
At the Apothecary Shoppe, you can shop with confidence knowing that I’ve hand-selected each and every product and had it carefully tested and assessed by trained Apothecary Shoppe staff.
My background is in naturopathic medicine and I’ve spent years learning everything I can about the personal and clinical use of herbal medicine, aromatherapy and holistic nutrition for optimal health and wellness. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that, when it comes to healing “quality” is essential for success.
When I founded the Apothecary Shoppe as a resource for our students and graduates at the American College of Healthcare Sciences (ACHS), I made a commitment to source the highest quality, therapeutically active, organic products and raw materials available.
Now, nearly 40 years later, I still take that commitment very seriously and regularly travel across the U.S. and internationally to meet with suppliers and distillers and visit organic herb farms and essential oil plantations. This ensures the products we stock for you at the Apothecary Shoppe are not only of the highest quality, but also ethically and sustainably produced. (You can watch some of my recent sourcing adventure videos under the Experience Tab on the Herb and Essential Oil pages of the website.)
I’m also incredibly proud to be able to offer you a range of products developed and made by our own ACHS graduates. From books to aromatherapy patches, I’m very proud of our graduates who are producing fantastic wellness products and resources. To see what’s available, look for Graduate Products under the For Students tab.
Please know, it’s important to me that you feel confident to choose holistic health tools for yourself, family, friends, and clients. So, as part of our mission to support conscientious shopping, here are a few things I feel are especially important to keep in mind when looking for wellness supplies:
1. Be aware of these unregulated and deceptive marketing terms:
- All natural
- Spray free
- Therapeutic grade
- CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®
- Pure and natural
- Medical grade
Certified Organic is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulated term. Certified Organic essential oils, herbs, and foods are produced without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers. Simply put: your USDA Certified Organic products are Non-GMO and are not directly sprayed with harmful pesticides.
2. Know your Latin plant names. They matter.
Did you know the Lavandula family (lavender) contains approximately 30 different species and the chemical composition of each species is different?
- Lavandula angustifolia (Mill.), known as “true lavender,” is famous for its soothing and sedative qualities.
- Lavandula latifolia (Medik.), known as “spike lavender,” is very harsh. It’s not typically used in aromatherapy, but it is sometimes used in commercial bath products.
- Lavandula intermedia (Emeric ex Loisel.) essential oil, known as “lavandin,” is more of a stimulant than a sedative due to its 1,8 cineole and camphor content.
It’s not enough to just purchase organic. For instance, sandalwood Santalum album (L.) essential oil is typically sourced from wild trees, but due to overharvesting and very little organized replanting, S. album is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. As a result, I made a decision to only source sandalwood from a sustainable sandalwood plantation in northern Australia.
I share these consumer tips with you so that you can rest assured all essential oils, herbs, and holistic health products at the Apothecary Shoppe are sourced with care, compassion, and a commitment to environmental stewardship for generations to come.
