Why Senna? The sennas are scrubby desert plants that are commonly found in North Africa. Senna has small yellow flowers and grayish-green brittle leaflets. The Alexandrian senna pods are green and about 1 to 3-inches long, while the Egyptian senna pods are darker and narrower. It has a faint aroma, similar to black tea and a sweetish and mucilaginous taste. It can be prepared as a fluid extract, infusion, powder, syrup, and tincture.

Cautions and Contraindications:
Senna is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.
Avoid senna if you are taking a digoxin. Senna is a stimulant laxative that can decrease levels of potassium in the body and increase risk of side effects of this drug.
Avoid senna if you are taking anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin. Senna can cause diarrhea and increase the effect of this drug, increasing the risk of bleeding.

Formula:
INFUSION OF SENNA PODS:
Senna Senna alexandrina pods: 6 to 12 (adults) or 3 to 6 (children)
Ginger Zingiber officinale root powder: ½ teaspoon
Place the pods in a glass of lukewarm water and leave to soak for about 12 hours. Strain and add ginger root power. Use one to three tablespoons at night. Store for no more than 24 hours in the refrigerator.
