The Story

Comfrey: Symphytum officinale (L.)

About comfrey leaf: Comfrey leaves are oval-shaped, large, and covered in prickly hairs. Comfrey is a perennial herb that grows wild in damp places. The roots and leaves are primarily used in herbal preparations.

How to Use

Benefits: Comfrey is best used in topical preparations. However, because there is not adequate substantive scientific research as defined by the FDA we are unable to provide any guidance on how to use this herb. We suggest you do your own research.

Cautions and Contraindications: The AHPA classifies comfrey as for external (topical) use only and not to be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. They recommend limiting topical application to four to six weeks of daily use. The AHPA warns against applying directly to broken or abraded skin.

COMFREY APPLICATION:

Comfrey leaves Symphytum officinale: 1 ounce

Lemon balm leaves Melissa officinalis: 1 ounce

Chickweed leaves Stellaria media: ½ ounce

Place all the herbs together in hot to simmering water and let sit for three to five minutes. Strain herbs out, saving the water, and allow to cool slightly. Wash area with herb waters, and then apply warm wet herb matter to skin. Cover with muslin cloth if desired. Leave on until herbs cool completely. You can repeat up to three times daily as desired.
