Basil: Ocimum basilicum (L.)
Why basil? Sweet basil has a unique, clove-like aroma. Historically, sweet basil was used in religious and spiritual ceremonies. Practitioners commonly inhaled sprays of the herb during fasts to give them strength. Today, sweet basil is a widely used culinary ingredient, famous for its fresh, spicy, "green" flavor.
