The Story

Witch Hazel: Hamamelis virginiana (L.)

Why Witch Hazel Bark? A beautiful, north American tree, witch hazel is said to have received its name because it flowers in January while no other plants show signs of life, and therefore it was thought to be under a magic spell. Witch hazel bark can be used topically to soothe mild burns and ease normal discomfort from insect bites.

Quality Assured: Our certified organic witch hazel is responsibly sourced in the U.S.A. This herb is Certified Organic by Oregon Tilth and grown without the use of genetic engineering, artificial fertilizers, or pesticides. Our experts here at the Apothecary Shoppe personally evaluate every herb through taste, touch, and smell to assure that you are receiving the best botanicals suitable for clinical use.

How to Use

Wellness Support: Witch hazel is particularly useful in supporting normal recovery from bleeding, and can be used to support the digestive system. Topically, Native Americans used witch hazel extensively in poultices to ease swelling along the body.

Cautions and Contraindications: Classed as safe for consumption when used appropriately. There have been isolated reports of stomach irritation and one case of witch hazel tannins causing liver damage. The volatile oil contains safrole, which is a known carcinogen, but in amounts considered too low to be problematic.
