Salvia sclarea
Producing organ: flower
Origin: Oregon, USA
Crop: Cultivated, Spray Free GC.
Production method: Steam distilled. Clary sage is usually solvent extracted as steam distillation produces a lower yield. We prefer steam distilled for therapeutic aromatherapy as solvent extracted oils usually leave some residue solvent material.
Main therapeutic constituents: linalol, nerol, linalyl acetate. A gas chromatographic analysis is available on request.
Wellness Support: Clary sage aromatherapy essential oil is a natural astringent aiding in clean and healthy skin. When used in a bath soak it helps to stimulate, energize, and strengthen the body. Clary sage also is an emmenagogue which can help soothe and support PMS related pain.*
Perfumery: Clary sage was extremely popular in France as a perfume fixative and is still used extensively in perfumery for its exceptional holding power. It has a very warming fragrance reminiscent of ambergris or labdanum.
Oils That Blend Well With Clary Sage: Clary Sage oil’s warming aroma blends well with bergamot, cardamom, cedarwood, clove bud, coriander, cypress, frankincense, geranium, grapefruit, jasmine, lavender, lavandin, lemon, lime, neroli, orange, petitgrain, and sandalwood. When blended with frankincense, it gives an amber-like oriental note.
Cautions and Contraindications: Clary Sage’s toxic rating is Moderate and a skin patch test is required. It is not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy. It is contraindicated if there is a history of low blood pressure, estrogen dependent cancer, endometriosis, and epilepsy. It can cause photosensitivity. Clary sage can be narcotic in doses above RDD.
